What's In Your Kit? With Rose Fortuna
Photo by Richard BertoneRose Fortuna is a brilliantly talented makeup artist and dear friend. She has been in the biz for well over five years and has clients ranging from Karmaloop to Stuff Boston and is a fixture at any major Betsey Johnson show in town. Her art school background (Mass Art, for those that don't know) allows her to break the boundaries of traditional makeup by seeing each new face as an individual chance to create something beautiful and original. She is talented to the point of inspiring envy, and if you didn't already know her, you certainly will now [check back next week as she has done the makeup for NB's own newest Featured Editorial.] I asked Rose to give us an inside look at her kit for our new feature, and it was perfect timing as she had just returned from The Makeup Show.
"I attended the NYC Makeup Show May 16th and 17th at the Metropolitan Pavilion in Chelsea. This year the event hosted over 5000 attendees and over 70 exhibitors from all over the world. Like last year, I came home inspired, excited, a bit overwhelmed, and super broke. This visually stimulating, information-overload of a trade event houses a plethora of workshops, vendors, seminars, beauty professionals, beauty junkies, drag queens and the every day diva. Makeup has become a necessary evil for people of all walks of life. Whether one uses makeup to exercise his or her own self vanity or simply to practice ones confidence and sense of well being…makeup rules the world."
After the jump, the products Rose is obsessing over (new and old), and why you're fast asleep if you haven't had a chance to try them for yourself.
Here are some life-changing products Rose found at the show and is kind enough to school us on...

Pointed Foundation Brush $32
The unique shape of this brush truly stands out from its traditionally flat sister. The synthetic bristles form a slight tip allowing for accuracy and precision around the nose and under the eyes. This brush also works great for applying contour color. The density of the bristles allow you to build product quickly or apply a heavier formula of foundation with minimal work. Ummm…YES PLEASE!
Naked Cosmetics
Pure Mineral Pigments $9.99-$179.99
Here we have line of 100% mineral make up. Neat, right? Naked pigments are super fine mica based powders that can be used on the eyes, lips, cheeks, body, anywhere really! (Try mixing them in with body lotion or facial moisturizer to give your skin a gorgeous glow!) The colors range from soft neutrals to a variety of bolder shades of the rainbow. What I’m really feelin’ about these pigments is they are absolutely perfect for everyday use! I have so many pigments from other lines that are too bold, too sparkly, too glittery, and too frosty…for every day. These pigments deliver color and shine that is buildable, not overwhelming. These colors will give your day a bit of glam without making you feel like Priscilla queen of the desert!
MAC
Clear Lipglass $14
This clear gloss is my jammy jam! You can wear it alone, over lip liner, lipstick, even over other glosses (none can compare). Your lips will be super smoochable, you will look thinner, younger, and prettier. These are facts.
Beauty Blender $19.95-$25.99
Designed by two Hollywood make up artists, the Beauty Blender is the only sponge I will use! This cute, suede like pink sponge fits perfectly in the palm of your hand and allows for a flawless foundation application every time. Since this sponge has no hard edges, you never need to worry about streaky make up. Dunk your Beauty Blender in water then squeeze out the excess. The moist sponge now has a bit of bounce and will not drink up your foundation. You can use the tip for smaller areas of the face (under the eyes and around the nose), or the bulbous end for larger areas (cheeks and forehead). Whether you stipple your foundation on with this tool or use long strokes to blend it out, you will find a flawless finish will always be your end result!
Also, make sure to wash your Beauty Blender after every use and allow to dry completely. This will extend the life of your tool as well as ensure that you will not deposit any oil from your face from previous usage. You can buy a special cleanser for this product but I was told by a fellow make up artist that any anti bacterial soap will work as well.
Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics
OCC Lip Tar $12.50
These lip colors pack a punch like no other! First off, they are 100% vegan and cruelty free. There are 24 pigment-saturated colors (from rich blue to ballet slipper pink) and I strongly suggest mixing your favorites to customize your own personal shade of gorgeousness. A couple of my favorites are “Grandma” and “Hoochie”. You only need the TEENIEST bit of product as a little certainly goes a long way. These lip colors come in small tubes, apply like lip gloss but have the wearability and satin finish of a lipstick. I strongly believe that Lip Tars are the new black!
Make Up For Ever
HD Invisible Cover Foundation $40
I’m super swoony over this product. [Ed. note: this is what I use in my kit, too.] The HD Invisible Cover foundation is a medium to full coverage oil-free liquid foundation. It goes on like a dream and uses what scientists call “magic” to make your skin appear completely flawless. Actually, what’s making your skin look that great is a couple of key ingredients, dimethicone and sericite. This product works for all skin types and can be worn alone or worn under powder. This foundation gives the skin a soft look and “enables rays of light to spread more widely, intensifying the radiance of the complexion." See...magic!
There you have it, ladies and gents! The inside scoop on must-have products from one of the most talented and fly-as-hell makeup artists in town. If you are interested in Rose's contact or booking information, shoot me an email and I'll be sure to put you in touch.
