Shopkeep Of The Week: Jessica, Marc Jacobs

For the first edition of our Shopkeep of the Week feature on the new NB, I caught up with near and dear friend of mine and perennial Boston cool girl, Jessica Allen.

Jessie has been putting in her time over at Marc Jacobs since the early aughties, helping make this old commonwealth dress more fashionably one customer at a time.

After the jump, find out where Jessica shops and gets her hair did, her thoughts on Collection leaving Boston, and why you'll never find her ice skating at Frog Pond (or elsewhere, for that matter).

What is your official position at Marc Jacobs, and how long have you been there?  What made you want to work in fashion retail?
I've been a sales associate at Marc since day one.  That would make six years this coming August.  Wow!  I was recruited by a friend of a friend; at that time I was a massage therapist at Healthworks and doing restaurant work at night.  Although I had no prior retail experience, I was intrigued and decided I was ready for a big change.

How did you feel about Collection going out--what was it--two years ago?
Yeah, the Marc Jacobs Collection store closed a little more than a year and a half ago.  [non-ed ed note:  both floors of the space now house Marc by Marc Jacobs, Men's downstairs and Women's upstairs]  It was a big change for the employees and took a little getting used to, but demographically speaking it just made sense.  It was a smart move, and we're doing really well.

What are some of your favorite stores to shop, Newbury Street and beyond?
Well, besides Marc... G-Star, Urban Outfitters, and Uncle Pete's.

When you're not working during the day, where can we find you?
You could find me walking my dog around lake Quannapowit or Salem Willows, hanging out at Emerge getting a snip or some highlights from Shaun O'Connor, or harassing the girls at Fresh.

Where around town might you be spotted after dark?
I love 28 Degrees, Stella, Deluxe, and the turkey burgers at Bukowskis are the best!  I'll hit up Estate every once in a while on a Thursday night.  But, if it's after midnight--any day of the week--you can usually find me at Machine!  I have a soft spot for drag queens and trannies.  ;)  [NB note--we do too.]

If you could change one thing about Boston fashion, what would it be?
The first thing I would do is outlaw Uggs.  Also, it should be known that unless at home, at the gym, or accompanied by a yoga mat, sweatpants are unacceptable attire!  I'd also want to change the perception people have that you have to spend a lot of money to look good, because that's just not true.  Just recently a girl came into Marc and I couldnt stop staring at her boots.  They were amazing and I absolutely fell in love with them.  I had to ask her where she got them... she blushed, giggled a little, and answered "Target."

Do you have any irrational fears (e.g. stepping on cracks in the sidewalk or whole milk)?  COUGHstole this from JanineCOUGH
That's a funny question... I'm not afraid of much that isn't truly 'fear worthy.'  But how's this... I don't like to go ice skating because I'm afraid when I fall down (and I will...) that someone is going to skate over my fingers.  Is that irrational?

When you see her out she might be dressed in bad ass biker bitch leather and towering heels, but Jessie is far and away the most down to earth girl on the whole of Newbury Street (and maybe even the greater Boston area).  Stop in, say hello, see what I'm talking about...and tell her New Brahmin sent you!
