It's the Bare Necessities: Concrete Jungle

There’s a new jungle in town, and it's made a home in the heart of Boston's shopping district. Started by Northeastern duo Matthew Osofisan and Michael Toney in 2009, Annie Mulz— both a play on words and personification of Animals— took the concept of Darwin’s Natural Law (everything is bound to the laws of nature), and transformed it into a clothing line that would give any streetwear brand a run for its money.  One year, an IDEA, and $10,000 later, pop-up shop Concrete Jungle (297 Newbury St, Boston) took root in attempt to fuse jungle and city through clothing, art and music to embody the creative spirit of Boston in today’s survival of the fittest world.

After the jump, step inside the Jungle.

Recovery

Pic by Callista WilsonThis past weekend, if you happen to not follow the NB Twitter (or any of the masthead's Twitter), most of the gang headed to my homeland, the Jersey Shore, for my bachelorette weekend. In the words of Gawker, it's the "most important sociological experiment of our time" (growing up there and returning, I mean this for the entire area, not just that show). We stuck out like sore thumbs with our sunburn and iPhones constantly out amongst the leathery tourists with bad tattoos. I got yelled at for going to the beach, someone fell off a parked car, we frolicked in the Atlantic, watched a lot of fat Snooki's fist pump, ate some amazing mozzarella sticks and rode a bunch of scary rides.

Without getting too into any more detail than that and what was revealed via the Twitter hashtag #nbfistpump (shouts to Deana for the inspiration), let's just say that we all need a day or two to get back into the swing of things (aside from D's, I can't help but do D's if I'm in front of my computer). But besides the 6 hour drive home late last night, I've been caught up with wedding-related stuff lately and need to take some time to plan ahead around here so we don't all implode in the next few weeks with all the events and productions we have on the NB plate. We'll be back in full force tomorrow, but I just wanted to leave you with some words of wisdom, captured in a photo by Click to read more ...

Summer Hair Rehab With SalonCapri's Nicholas Penna, Jr.

Click for source. With summer drawing to a close, our hair is in less than stellar shape. We asked Nicholas Penna, Jr., lead stylist and owner of SalonCapri to share with us some expert recovery tips.

Before the beach: "If you can't spend the money on an expensive protection product, such as Kerastase Soleil products (which are awesome for sun protection, but can get costly), you can also do wonders with a good conditioner. Dampen your hair and comb the conditioner into your hair with a wide-tooth comb. This helps to coat the hair cuticles and make it harder for chlorine and salt water to get into the hair follicles."

After the damage has been done: "If you feel like the summer sun and chlorine has taken a toll on your hair, the best thing you can do is spend money on a professional conditioning treatment. The L'Oreal Power Dose [an inexpensive option] gives your hair a boost of condition and shine. If you can't splurge on a salon condtioning treatment, the tried and true at-home remedy of olive oil in your hair will work too! Take about one tablespoon of household olive oil, rub it in the palms of your hands, and then run your hands through damp hair. Use sparingly as sometimes olive oil can be tricky to get out of your hair. If you want a deep condition, leave the olive oil for an hour or two; if you want a light condition, rinse it out immediately. This is a great way to cure dry, damaged, and split hair from the sun and chlorine."

Thanks to Nick and SalonCapri for the info!

Picture Perfect: Richard Avedon at MFA

We may not have Topshop, FIT or the Conde Nast building, but who says there’s no fashion scene in Boston?  Organized by the Richard Avedon Foundation and the International Center of Photography, the MFA’s Avedon Fashion: 1944-2000 is the first retrospective of his fashion photography and it’s a hop and a T-ride away.  The exhibition is organized by date, but sequential order isn’t mandatory— I accidently viewed it backwards, and was at no disadvantage (other than my apparent mathematical handicap).

Avedon’s work is often described as “the essence of American glamour” and there was no shortage among the mostly black and white, life-size photographs and eye-popping magazine covers of his career.  All the supermodel favorites were present— Suzy Parker, Twiggy, Jean Shrimpton, Kate Moss— and more than a few nostalgia-inducing celebrities (Audrey Hepburn, anyone?).  Among the iconic portraits you may have seen as re-runs in Vogue, notables include a young Penelope Tree in an Ungaro mask and Nadja Auermann lighting her cigarette from smoldering hundred dollar bills (from Avedon’s “Mr. and Mrs. Comfort” portfolio for The New Yorker).  If you’re looking for racy, there are a few NSFK shots, including a frontal nude of Contessa Christina Paolozzi that lost Harper’s Bazaar more than a few subscriptions when it was published in 1961.

Besides the artistic element of Avedon’s work, the most rewarding part is the undeniable influence on modern day fashion; just look to the numerous Veruschka mid-jump shots and compare them to a spread in American Vogue, or a 1996 photo of Kate Moss wearing a sheer Versace blouse (do I even need to tell you how big sheer is right now?).  Considering Avedon has described his work as a “double-sided mirror” expressing both his subject and himself, you have until January 17 to pick the brain of fashion’s most influential photographer.  Don’t pass it up.
